The third pillar is about our shared future: pioneering human progress through sustainability, including the materials we produce and the innovations we bring to market, aligned with the priorities of the coming low-carbon economy.

Tratos has acknowledged long time ago the reality of climate change and its potential to have a negative impact on the world, our communities and our business. It has implemented a strong environmental policy and continues to move toward greener cable solutions, such as its cables without halogens and Tratos-Green – made using purely hydroelectric energy. As well, it is worth mentioning Tratos Cavi has been using clean renewable energy from its own hydroelectric plant since 1980.
All Tratos’ manufacturing facilities have been awarded ISO 14001 certification for their Environmental Management Systems. Tratos is fully committed to providing protection both for people working with its cables, – and for the environment. Tratos has been accredited to BS EN ISO 9001 since 2008.
In 2015, Tratos supported the outcomes of the Paris Agreement and the long-term goal to limit the global average temperature rise to well below 2°C, recognising that doing so will require governments and companies alike to approach climate change with more ambition and action.
The EU has set the most ambitious targets in its attempt to lead the battle against climate change by taking further measures and investing in new energy sources. By 2030 greenhouse gas emissions will be cut by 40% and energy efficiency will need to improve by 32.5%. Tratos has supported the above ambitious goals and it aims to support the EU endeavours towards a safe, stable and sustainable mix that consists of different alternatives including fusion energy. Tratos has produced the superconductor for the ITER project, part of Fusion4Energy, via the consortium with ICAS.
In the UK, Tratos supports the Climate Change Act, a legal commitment of the UK to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero – a 100% reduction – by 2050. Tratos not only has in place standards of measure its CO2 emissions, but as well has put measures to mitigate GHG effects on the atmosphere, by planting trees and using clean and green energy sources. It is continuously sharing with the other UK businesses its environmental policies and best practices.
Tratos believes it is playing a great part in tackling climate change – from helping to develop technology for producing clean energy as Fusion for Energy project, where it was able to produce a very important component, the Superconductors, to building a new low-carbon economy and smart, eco-friendly products like electric vehicles and smartphones.
Always embracing innovation, this year and in years to come, Tratos plan to continue to explore ways to redesign its business model to a circular economy. It is actively looking at ways to reduce and reprocess all the scrap inside the cable production.
Environmental policy
Environment plays an important role in the healthy living of human beings. Tratos remains committed to protecting the environment, the planet and our common shared future. Tratos’ environmental protection activities are designed to maintain or restore the quality of the environment by preventing the emission of pollutants or reducing the presence of polluting substances.
Towards Net Zero Emissions
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main greenhouse gas, accounting for 81% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, while 87% of all human-produced carbon dioxide emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil. Tratos has in place standards and policies to reduce the CO2 emissions as well as to calculate the CO2 emissions and to mitigate their impact by planting trees, as well as using clean energy sources.
Carbon Footprint
Tratos continuously works to improve its performance in bringing greener, cleaner and accessible solutions to every industry sector it manufactures for, from ports and marine to mass transit and communications. Tratos has partnered with Spanish standards agency AENOR to develop and build technology to measure, and so manage, companies’ own individual carbon footprints. Tratos remains committed to reduce by 10% a year its carbon emissions.
Circular Economy
The circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as much as possible. In this way, the life cycle of products is extended. Tratos’ business has been circular since its establishment, even without knowing it. In producing its cables, Tratos has always kept in mind the need for resources to be managed more efficiently throughout their life cycle. Through embracing innovation, Tratos is keen to design for longevity and reduce waste to a minimum.
Innovation
Tratos firmly believes in innovation, as without it any business cannot survive. The successful exploitation of new ideas is crucial to a business being able to thrive, improve its processes, bring new and improved products and services to market, increase its efficiency and, most importantly, improve its profitability. Technology development and innovation are key drivers of economic growth and productivity. By embracing a culture of innovation, Tratos has been able to react promptly to changes and discover new opportunities.
