Building on the first pillar, the second focuses on people, the success of our communities and our contribution to governments and partners, including local communities: collaborating to enable long-term benefits where we operate.
Social Global Goals

Tratos works tirelessly to leave a lasting, positive legacy everywhere it is present. It does so in many ways; one is via an increased focus to invest in the most deprived areas and regions.
In 2019, it began the journey of revising its approach to the communities and development by aligning them to the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals and with global technological, economic and social changes in mind.
At the same year it has established a Charity foundation, Esharelife Foundation, which is a grant-making charity. The charity is officially registered with The Charity Commission of England and Wales (Charity no. 1183101) and actively support other charities in the world in delivering one mission: share life in the digital era.
Actively supporting local communities where it operates, Tratos never spared an effort to ensuring that the money it pays via taxes and royalties to governments and local authorities is disclosed transparently. By doing so, Tratos safeguards that the right amount of money is used for development and other community needs.
It also recognises that its business is often the major source of jobs and livelihoods in the communities where it operates, which are often far from metropolitan centres. We take this responsibility seriously.
Tratos actively searching the new ways on how it can better leverage financial tools, including those of social impact investors – again, for the benefit of our communities – and also looking at how it can increase the positive impact of its own community investments.
Also, it is investing in vocational training and acquiring the work skills of the future. Tratos has nourtered a vibrant cooperation via its Academy with Cass Bussiness School, Manchester University, Bolton University, Politecnico di Torino, Università di Pisa, Università di Firenze.
Employment and job creation is central to our economic contribution in each of the 5 areas where we have a footprint. In Tuscany, approximately 93% of our employees are from local communities. In our factory in Sicily, we employ people from the Catania area and local community. We are a major employer in Knowsley in the north-west of England. At our Tratos UK Ltd operation, 95% of the workforce is from local communities.
In 2019, Tratos has paid 10% of its turnover of £25mln in wages and other employment costs. We are proud we paid taxes in Italy and the UK, according to our operation. We paid more than 35% on tax rates.
The employment opportunities we create do not stop with our own business. We continue to study our procurement practices, not only to deepen our local spending but also to develop a responsible supply chain in line with the coming low-carbon economy. In 2019, we spent 50% of our turnover with more than 3,000 suppliers in more than 120 locations. We believe this is how economic development and prosperity is created and sustained.
Human Values
Tratos’ family business is based first and foremost on human values. During its long existence in the international markets, it has always kept in mind the virtues that point to the human element while interacting with its employees, customers and business partners. Some of the core human values of Tratos are kindness, honesty, respect, acceptance, consideration, appreciation, listening, and love towards other human beings.
Code of Ethics
Tratos’ Code of Ethics clearly defines the expectations of standards and promotes, reinforces and supports the highest standards from everyone who works or deals with Tratos. It sets out the principles designed to help Tratos’ people to conduct business honestly and with integrity.
Human Rights
Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. They are inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. At Tratos, we are committed to protecting the human rights of all our colleagues and of everyone who receives direct or indirect services from us.
Peace supporting activities
In an effort to support the peace process in the Middle East, Tratos was proud to have supplied £5.5m worth of equipment, transformers and poles to the Palestinian Southern Electricity Company (SELCo).
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Tratos is conscious of what kind of impact it is having on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental. Its strong Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a commitment and it encompasses all the Tratos Group’s relationships, from workers, customers, investors, suppliers, business partners and regulatory authorities to local communities and the wider public.
Supporting charities
As a clear expression of its strong Social Corporate Responsibility, Tratos continuously is supporting the noble causes of many charities, as well established its own Charity – Esharelife Foundation.
Esharelife has a sole mission – to share life in the digital era – and acts as a fundraiser to fund the educational programmes for children in some of the most deprived areas of Kenya. By investing in the education of children in Kenya, Esharelife aims to help the sustainable development of the country.
Paying tax
Without paying taxes, governments wouldn’t be able to meet the demands of their societies. Tratos has always promoted a culture of paying taxes, not avoiding them.
By doing so, Tratos is implementing its strong CSR and helping the central and local authorities to perform civil operations, run government welfare schemes, and to improve healthcare, education, transport and other public infrastructure.
Local Jobs
Tratos has deliberately chosen to invest in the most economically deprived regions of Italy and the UK, aiming to create jobs and support the wellbeing of local communities.
Through its strong CSR, paying salaries and local taxes, since 1966 Tratos has proven to be a sustainable source of income and enabler of local economic and social development.
