Successfully installed worldwide since 1982, Tratos SkyWrap is a fibre optic cable helically applied on ground wires or phase conductors. A specially designed spinning machine is used to wrap the cable under controlled conditions. This system offers a complete communication link designed and engineered for high-voltage environments at low cost.

Tratos SkyWrap is the ideal solution when access to the overhead line is problematic due to the environment or terrain. The installation equipment is lightweight, easy to handle, and quick to install. When power outages are hard to coordinate, Tratos SkyWrap can be installed on the ground wire while the phase conductors remain live or on phase conductors with a single circuit outage.

SkyWrap Features

  • Suitable for use on distribution lines up to 150kV
  • Gel-filled buffer tubes are S-Z stranded for easy mid-span access
  • A dual-layer jacket design (Birdshot) is available for installation in areas prone to shotgun activity.
  • Small size and low weight ensure minimum loads are applied to the overhead line

The name “SkyWrap” is one of three related brand names introduced by FOCAS in 1990 to describe its fibre-optic cable products used in the construction of power utility communications networks, the others being SkyLite OPGW and SkySpan ADSS. When AFL acquired FOCAS in 2000, the SkyLite and SkySpan brand names were dropped but SkyWrap has continued to be used. Prior to 1992 the brand name was Rayfos, owned by Raychem Corporation, which developed the technology before selling it to FOCAS. Rayfos is a portmanteau name constructed from “Raychem” and “fibre optic system.”

In an exciting development, TRATOS has acquired all shares of AFL Telecommunications Europe Ltd, a subsidiary of AFL Telecommunications LLC (AFL). This acquisition includes the SkyWrap® helically-wrapped fibre optic solution for overhead power lines, further strengthening Tratos’ portfolio in the fibre optic cable market for power utilities, rail, and oil and gas industries. With this acquisition, Tratos is set to enhance its product offerings and continue the legacy of innovative fibre-optic solutions in the global market.
