TRATOS Cavi at the heart of Italy’s First Multicore Fibre Link

Open Fibre has deployed Italy’s first multicore optical fibre link on a live network in Milan: an approximately 2.1-kilometre route between the Baggio and Galvani POPs, already operational for service transport. The project marks a significant step in the evolution of the country’s digital infrastructure, as it enables a substantial increase in transmission capacity by leveraging the existing network, without the need for new excavations or additional cable deployment.

At the heart of the initiative are two key technological contributions: TRATOS Cavi, which designed and manufactured the microcable used for the link, and Heraeus Covantics, the producer of the four-channel multicore fibre integrated into the cable. The collaboration between these two companies made it possible to bring an ultra-high-capacity technology from the experimental stage to a real-world application on an operational network.
The role of TRATOS Cavi is particularly significant, as the microcable is the physical element that enables the use of multicore fibre within a compact, efficient infrastructure compatible with the requirements of next-generation networks. Through this solution, the company confirms its ability to develop high-density optical cables designed to meet the growing data traffic generated by cloud services, artificial intelligence, edge computing and advanced digital services.

At the same time, HERAEUS COVANTICS contributed to the project by producing the multicore fibre, a technology that enables data to be transmitted in parallel across multiple independent channels within the same fibre. This approach makes it possible to multiply the available capacity compared with traditional fibres, while enhancing existing infrastructure and making the network more scalable, high-performing and sustainable.
The benefits of multicore fibre are particularly evident in links between POPs, central offices and data centres, where large volumes of traffic are concentrated. Increasing transmission capacity without multiplying cables, equipment, and infrastructure works reduces the physical impact of the network, optimises technical spaces, and contributes to more efficient energy management.
For TRATOS Cavi, participation in this initiative confirms the company’s role as a technological partner in digital transformation and as a key player in the development of future-ready networks: more powerful, sustainable and efficient infrastructures capable of supporting the growth of connectivity and advanced services across the country. The project also highlights the value of a qualified industrial supply chain, with contributions from SERTORI S.p.A. for cable installation and NEW FONT for technological support in developing the cable termination systems at the central office.
