In today’s fast-paced world, where innovation often takes centre stage, it’s truly inspiring to witness a project that combines cutting-edge technology with a deep respect for the environment and the needs of a community. This project, undertaken by SITE SpA and E-Distribuzione, represents a significant leap forward in energy distribution. Located in the picturesque setting of Lake Como, Italy, this initiative has replaced an ageing subglacial power cable and paved the way for a more reliable and sustainable energy supply for the local community.
Over 60 years ago, when ENEL was still the National Electricity Authority, an ambitious project was conceived to create an alternative route for power distribution that would be both efficient and minimally invasive to the community and the environment. The idea was to lay a 15,000 Volt (15 kV) power cable from Tavernola to Punta Geno, with underground sections and a subglacial stretch. This forward-thinking vision has now come full circle with the recent project.
The collaboration between SITE SpA and E-Distribuzione has replaced over 1 kilometre of historic power cable resting on the lake’s bottom with a state-of-the-art cable provided by TRATOS CAVI SPA, a global leader in cable manufacturing. This endeavour signifies a substantial investment in the Como region, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for the surrounding community. In the event of a fault, this revamped power grid will be able to reroute power directly from the primary substation at Como Nord in Maslianico to the eastern shore of the lake, guaranteeing uninterrupted service.
This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation. It showcases how listening to the needs of a community and respecting the environment can lead to groundbreaking solutions. The project was not without its challenges, including working at depths of up to 108 meters in Lake Como, but the teams’ dedication made it a success.
The meticulous planning and execution, which included using a ferry for equipment transport and a 35-ton reel for laying the new cable, exemplify the commitment to excellence that drove this project. It revitalises the region’s power infrastructure and highlights the area’s rich history of energy development.
As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, we are reminded of the importance of sustainable and forward-thinking projects that benefit the present and future generations. The revitalisation of Como’s subglacial power grid is not just about providing electricity; it is about illuminating the path to a greener, more efficient, and more responsible energy future.
We extend our gratitude to E-Distribuzione for their trust and commend all whose hard work and dedication have made this significant step towards the future of energy possible. The “new light” this project brings to the city of Como serves as a beacon of hope and a shining example of what can be accomplished when innovation and community needs come together.
