Project: Supply of Intrafield Composite Cables Phase II
Location: Mexico, Area 1
Company: ENI Mexico
Tratos delivers submarine composite cables for ENI’s Mexico Area 1 Phase II Development
Tratos continues its excellent cooperation with ENI and recently has supplied to ENI- Mexico composite cables, ancillaries and technical assistance services needed for phase II of the Mexico Area 1 development project.
The work was assigned in July 2022 and delivered as requested in December 2023. All cable components were built and tested in Tratos Cavi SPA and shipped to Brazil at the MFX factory which assembled, sheathed, armed and tested the cables for delivery to the port of Salvador Baia.
The scope of work included the supply of:
- 18,000 m Composite Submarine Cable with 3X185 mm2 33 kV + 2 Optical Cables of 32 fibres;
- 14,500 m Composite Submarine Cable with 3X70 mm2 4.15 kV + 2 Optical Cables with 32 fibres;
- Accessories for laying and terminating cables on the ground and on the platform;
- Assistance with the installation and commissioning of all accessories supplied.
Tratos supplied 3 drums:
- 2 x 9,085 m of cable 3X185+2FO 2X (920 x 576 x 940 cm) 2 X 280,000 kg
- 1 x 14,805 m of cable 3X70+2FO 1X (920 x 576 x 940 cm) 1 X 310,000 kg
- 1 x 740 m of cable 3X70+2FO 1X (345 x 460 x 350 cm) 1 x 18,000 kg
This project had a unique delivery method that involved using three massive cable reels. Each reel carried different lengths and types of cables, with gross weights ranging from 18,000 kg to 310,000 kg. This logistical feat highlights the complex nature of modern offshore projects.
The Area 1 development project in Mexico includes the development of three oil fields, namely Amoca, Miztón and Tecoalli, located approximately 10km offshore from the Tabasco coast in the Bay of Campeche, Gulf of Mexico.
The Phase II of the above-mentioned project, which is estimated to be worth several million USD for supplies alone (excluding assistance and commissioning of accessories), is not just a financial investment. It is a milestone in the evolution of offshore energy projects. The project showcases the intricate ballet of engineering, logistics, and international collaboration necessary to propel the energy sector into a future of sustainable, efficient, and reliable power generation and distribution.
Tratos & ENI cooperation
ENI is actively developing and exploring oil and gas resources in the Gulf of Mexico, with the Area 1 Development Project being its most significant project in the region.
Supply of the intrafield composite cables for the Phase II marks the third project of Tratos in Area 1 Development Project of Mexico in partnership with ENI. The first two projects were completed in 2017 for the optical cable for connecting platforms to the mainland and the second in 2019 for the connection with composite Medium Voltage cables with optical fibre, for the Platforms – Land connection.

The offshore wind industry is riding the crest of a wave of innovation, with several exciting trends shaping its future. Sustainability is at the heart of the industry’s evolution, with a focus on minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing recycling of components. This commitment to sustainability is essential for ensuring the long-term viability of offshore wind energy.
Giant turbines are taking centre stage, harnessing more power from each gust of wind. Turbines with capacities exceeding 14 MW are already in operation, and even larger ones are on the horizon.
Floating wind farms are unlocking the potential of deeper waters, opening up vast expanses of ocean for energy generation. These floating giants can access stronger and steadier winds, boosting energy production.
New markets are emerging in Asia and North America, expanding the global footprint of offshore wind. This expansion is driven by ambitious clean energy targets and technological advancements.
Tratos is honoured to support the UK’s ambitious goal to be carbon neutral by 2050. Also, it works diligently and makes a significant contribution toward achieving Goal 7 of the UN Global Goals to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 13: Climate Action, Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Goal 14: Life Below Water, and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
