Tratos has been awarded the contract to supply DP World with Tratosflex ESDB reeling cables for installation in the cranes at the Jebel Ali port in Dubai.
The port is in the process of electrifying its existing diesel-driven RTG cranes as a means of significantly reducing energy costs and CO emissions. As part of this process, Tratosflex ESDB cables will be fitted to the newly electrified cranes.
The decision to specify Tratosflex ESDB cables was based on a combination of quality product used extensively in similar applications worldwide (including the Busan Port terminal in Korea) and strong local support from the Tratos office located in Jebel Ali Free Zone.
Tratosflex-ESDB is different from other reeling cables available in that Tratos engineers have modified the internal cable design, tightening the structure against the internal relative movement to accommodate high speed applications; this prevents the common problem of twisting that affects cables reeling at high speed. Twisting makes cable cores elongate unevenly which in turn leads to conductors on the outer layer of a strand face a greater risk of being broken. A broken cable reeling at high speed is dangerous and can cause extensive and costly damage to equipment.
A medium voltage rubber insulated and sheathed drum reeling cable, Tratosflex-ESDB operates in temperatures from -20ºC to +60ºC.
Tratosflex-ESDB is one of the range of cables for moving applications from Tratos, which include mono-spiral and multi-spiral reeling, basket reeling, festoons and spreaders. The cables can supply power, control and signalling functions including fibre-optic cables and components.
