Special Cables / Alternative Marine Power Cables

TRATOSMART AMP (Alternative Marine Power Cable) is a robust cable providing low-voltage shore connection (LVSC). This cable is used to supply ships with electrical power from shore.

When designing and manufacturing its TRATOS AMP cables, Tratos draws upon several decades of experience as an internationally recognised specialised manufacturer and supplier of reliable, robust cables for arduous applications such as the mining industry and flexible power cables for cranes used in Ports worldwide.

The conductors used are Tratos designs of finely stranded copper, Plain, class 5 according to IEC 60228, giving increased flexibility. The insulation of TRATOSAMP power and earth cores is EPR, and the insulation used on Control cores is XLPE in accordance with IEC 60092-360. The group of control cores are collectively screened with a braid of fine plain copper wires. The complete cable assembly is made up of 3 power (phase) cores laid up with 2 x earth cores plus 1 x control cable group laid in the interstices. Overall is a high abrasion resistant, flexible, robust and tough either a Chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSP) or chlorinated polyethylene rubber (CPE) (SH) sheath which gives protection from the saliferous marine environment in which these cables work. Tratos can also supply cables with a Black Polyurethane sheath when required.

This TRATOS AMP cable has a Voltage Rating of 0,6/1kV. The maximum permissible operating voltage in AC systems is 0,7/1,2kv. The maximum permissible operating voltage in DC systems is 0,9/1,8kv. The current carrying capacity is according to DIN VDE 0298, part4.

The maximum permissible operating temperature of the conductor is 90℃. The short circuit temperature of the conductor is 250℃.

Available in the following sizes 120 mm2, 185 mm2and 240 mm2 ;other sizes can be supplied on request.

Cables can be supplied with groups of 4 or 6, 2,5 mm2 collectively screened control cores. Fibre optic units can be included when required.

Tratos’ flexibility in design and manufacture means that they can produce their TRATOS AMP cable with different combinations of cores and materials, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Tratos for details of the versions for which they hold Third Party Approvals.

Application

Tratos’ robust Alternative Marine Power Cables (TRATOS AMP) provide the low-voltage shore connection (LVSC) used to supply ships with electrical power from shore. The process has many denominations and acronyms — Cold Ironing, Shore Power, Onshore Power Supply (OPS), Shore Side Electricity (SSE), AMP (Alternative Marine Power), and more, but all of them refer to the same thing and serve the same purpose — Namely the process of bringing power from the onshore grid to the vessels moored in ports worldwide.

Construction

  • Conductor more flexible than Cl.5 DIN VDE EN 60228 VDE 0295
  • Separator tape on the larger sizes of conductors.
  • Insulation Power and Earth cores - EPR,
  • Insulation Control cores - XLPE with collective screen
  • Outer sheath, Chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSP) or chlorinated polyethylene rubber (CPE) (SH) sheath equivalent to 5GM3 (or 5GM5 if required) quality or, on request, Black Polyurethane
