Tratos Multi-Layer Track Feeder Cable Boosts Performance and Safety of Rail Networks

Innovation in Action

Tratos continues to set the standard in rail and power cable technology, offering advanced solutions for rail, underground, power distribution, signalling, and electrical applications worldwide. Recognised for its commitment to innovation, Tratos recently tackled a critical challenge impacting rail operations in England, specifically related to track feeder cables.

The Challenge

Network Rail Approved cable

Track feeder cables are essential for delivering electrical power to the third rail network in England’s South East and Merseyside regions. However, the existing aluminium conductor track feeder cables in use were causing significant operational issues. Network Rail HQ’s Technical Authority identified severe degradation in the aluminium conductor, leading to corrosion and damage to the cable’s insulation. This deterioration caused electrical faults, overheating, and system failures, resulting in costly disruptions. The research highlighted the high stakes: a single power failure in London could disrupt 75% of southern region trains and 25% of trains nationally.

Tratos Track Feeder Solution

Tratos’ engineering team, after a thorough assessment and collaboration with Network Rail, developed the NRS/2/ELP/23002/02 track feeder cable, a groundbreaking solution designed to withstand water ingress and resist sheath damage.

The cable features several innovative advancements:

  • Water-Blocking Conductor Protection: Tratos incorporated a water-blocking material to safeguard the conductor against water ingress.
  • Multi-Layer Insulation System: Two layers of crosslinked materials were extruded as closely adherent layers over the separator tape, creating a compact and homogeneous body. This design optimises the cable’s mechanical and electrical properties.
  • Enhanced Fire Safety: The cable meets the stringent fire safety classification of B2ca-s1a-do-a1 as per BS EN 13501-6 – CPR, ensuring safe use in tunnels and other confined spaces.
  • Wet Ageing Resistance: Rigorous testing confirmed the cable’s long-term resistance to water and harsh environmental conditions.

The Benefits

The new Tratos track feeder cable has delivered transformative benefits for rail operations, including:

  • Reduced Maintenance: The enhanced durability and water-resistant design reduce the need for frequent trackside repairs, lowering maintenance costs.
  • Improved Safety: Minimizing trackside work aligns with the rail industry’s safety goals by reducing personnel exposure to hazards.
  • Decreased Downtime: The cable’s robust design prevents faults that would otherwise disrupt train services, ensuring smoother operations and fewer delays.

While exact figures on trackside labour hours saved are unavailable, the measurable benefits span thousands of meters of the rail network—a clear testament to the cable’s effectiveness.

Conclusion

The successful deployment of the Tratos® Multi-Layer Track Feeder Cable underscores the company’s role as a trusted partner in addressing critical rail infrastructure challenges. By combining innovative design with rigorous testing, Tratos has not only improved operational reliability but also contributed to the long-term safety and efficiency of rail networks.
