IEC 60840 – Power Cables with Extruded Insulation for Rated Voltages Above 30 kV up to 150 kV

IEC 60840 is an internationally recognised standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the test methods and performance requirements for high-voltage power cable systems with extruded insulation. It applies to systems designed for rated voltages above 30 kV (Um = 36 kV) up to and including 150 kV (Um = 170 kV).

This standard covers cables, accessories, and complete cable systems intended for fixed installations. It applies to both single-core cables and individually screened three-core cables under typical installation and operational conditions. It does not extend to special applications, such as submarine cables and their associated accessories, where modified tests or unique conditions may be required.

IEC 60840 is widely used in the design, manufacture, and testing of cable systems deployed in power transmission infrastructure, grid interconnections, and large-scale industrial energy networks. By providing a comprehensive set of requirements for type testing, routine testing, sample testing, and electrical performance, the standard ensures consistent quality and safety across high-voltage installations.

In addition to testing requirements, IEC 60840 outlines specifications for cable construction, material properties, and marking. These provisions support manufacturers in demonstrating compliance, assist procurement and inspection teams in evaluating product suitability, and provide end users with confidence in the long-term reliability and safety of the installed systems.
