Electric vehicle charging cables
Drawing upon years of experience in supplying tough, flexible cables for use in arduous operating conditions, such as quarries and container crane applications, Tratos engineers have developed a wide portfolio of cables designed specifically for use connecting Electric Vehicles to a charging point.
Continued investment in the latest technology, materials and human resources has enabled Tratos to develop an innovative solution for electric vehicle charging cables. The unique Tratos EV-RF – Reflective + Fluorescent is a High Visibility cable used to connect electric vehicles to a charging point. It ensures the highest level of safety by removing trip hazards associated with trailing cables.
Range
Tratos Electric Vehicle Charging Cables are manufactured in accordance with various National and International Standards as well as individual Company Specifications.
Tratos Electric Vehicle Charging Cables are designed for use with modern All Electric Vehicles (AEVs), traditional Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), including Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs).
Cables produced by Tratos include:
Mode 1
Single phase a.c. supplied from a normal household socket, slow charging with no communication between the vehicle and the charger. An earth fault conductor is included for safety.
Mode 2
Single phase a.c. supplied from a normal household socket, slow charging with the addition of a control and protecting system that requires additional cores within the cable for communication between the charging point and the vehicle.
Mode 3
Single or Three Phase a,c, which allows either slow or semi-fast charging through a special, EV dedicated electrical socket and charging unit, which takes over communication with the vehicle. Commonly used in public charging, mode 3 also has the functionality for smart grid integration.
Mode 4
High current d.c. charging, up to 200A to provide fast charging through a special, EV-dedicated electrical socket and charging unit, which takes over communication with the vehicle to control charging and system protection. Even higher power charging systems are being developed and introduced, which include active liquid cooling within the cable.
These Modes are defined in detail in IEC 61851
Construction
Tratos designs available include:
- Cables with Plain or Tinned annealed copper, Flexible Class 5 conductors.
- Insulated and sheathed designs both with and without either a pilot unit or communication unit within the cable.
Types of Insulations available include:
- Tratos EV1-2 type (Power Cores) or EV1-1 type (Pilot and Control cores)
- Cross-linked Elastomeric Insulation (EPR) EI4 or better
- All Tratos insulations exhibit excellent electrical characteristics
Types of Sheaths available include:
- Cross-linked Elastomeric Sheath EM2 or better
- PUR (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) TPU
All Tratos sheaths are robust, exhibit excellent moisture resistance, they resist the abrasion and typical operating conditions encountered during the charging of vehicles. They exhibit fuel and oil resistance, with excellent UV resistance, as well as being flame retardant.
The Tratos TPU sheathing compound is also classed as Low Smoke Zero Halogen.
Standards
Tratos EV charging cables can be manufactured in accordance with the following standards:
- IEC 62893 Series
- BS EN 50620
Designs to other Standards, such as IEC 60502-1 (BS IEC 60502-1) are also available on request.
Designed to be maintenance-free, Tratos EV charging cables offer exceptional long-term reliability and performance.
Benefits
Tratos specialises in the Design, Development and Production of cables for Electric Vehicle Charging Cables systems and has a great many years of experience supplying cables with proven reliability to customers worldwide. All Tratos Electric Vehicle Charging Cables are distinguished by the use of advanced technology to manufacture cables with increased pliability, decreased weight and increased strength.
Tratos Engineers work closely with manufacturers and suppliers of Electric Vehicle Charging systems and accessory manufacturers, including plugs, connectors, terminations and fixings, to help ensure a trouble-free installation.
Applications
Electric Vehicle Charging Cables is typically multi-conductor cable that is intended to carry an AC or DC charging current from a supply point to the electric vehicle.
The unique Tratos EV-RF – Reflective + Fluorescent High Visibility cable is intended for on-street or public charging points where its high visibility ensures the highest level of safety by removing trip hazards associated with trailing cables.
INNOVATION – Tratos Electric Vehicle Charging Cables are distinguished by Tratos’ ongoing investment in the latest technology, materials and human resources needed to meet the highest safety and performance requirements demanded by the Electric Vehicle Charging application
