Tratos developed their OHC-HV product as a means to increase the power transmitted on existing power lines by utilising carbon composite cores with TAL (Thermal resistant Aluminium alloy) conductors. This type of carbon fibre aluminium overhead conductor can replace traditional ACSR and AAAC types to gain a higher current carrying capacity without an increase in mass. This means that power lines can be upgraded to increase their capacity without replacing the transmission towers. These HTLS (High Temperature, Low Sag) overhead conductors can also reduce transmission losses compared to the traditional ACSR types and due to their strength and therefore reduced sag they can be used over longer spans. This means fewer pylons and therefore less visual impact on the landscape, and financial savings on the cost and installation of the structures that support overhead lines. Compared to ACSR conductor that has a galvanised steel strength member these overhead conductors utilise a composite non-magnetic construction as the load-bearing element which, due to its high strength to weight ratio, allows a smaller, lighter conductor with better resistance to ice and wind load or gives the potential to increase the conductive element giving a higher current carrying capacity and reduced losses when compared to ACSR type conductors.
