What is UL 758? Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) Explained

UL 758 is the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standard that defines the requirements for Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) — the category of insulated conductors and cables used for fixed internal wiring in electrical and electronic equipment, including instrument panels, switchgear, and control cabinets.

The standard covers single insulated conductors, multi-conductor cables, and flat cables. It specifies the construction, insulation materials, conductor types, voltage ratings, and test requirements that cables must meet to carry the AWM designation.

What is Tri-Rated cable?

Tri-Rated cable — also referred to as AWM cable or UL 758 cable — is a single-core flexible conductor that simultaneously satisfies three national standards:

  • UL 758 (USA) — Appliance Wiring Material
  • BS 6231 (UK) — Single-core PVC insulated cables for switchgear and controlgear wiring
  • CSA 22.2 No. 210.2 (Canada) — Appliance Wiring Material

This triple approval makes Tri-Rated cable the default choice for panel builders and OEM equipment manufacturers who export to multiple markets. A single cable type satisfies purchasing, compliance, and installation requirements across the UK, the United States, and Canada — avoiding the cost and complexity of stocking three separate cable types.

Applications

UL 758 AWM cables are primarily used in:

  • Fixed internal wiring of instrument panels and control cabinets
  • Switchgear and controlgear wiring
  • Industrial machinery and automation equipment
  • OEM electrical and electronic equipment destined for UK, US, and Canadian markets

Technical scope

UL 758 covers a wide range of insulation systems, conductor classes, and voltage ratings. The AWM designation appears on the cable’s surface marking, along with the applicable style number, which defines the specific construction and ratings.
