Scarabeo 5 – North Sea – Norway

Company: Saipem

Project: Scarabeo 5 – North Sea – Norway

Tratos & Saipem cooperation

SSDR Scarabeo 5, an Italian built rig designed specifically for Norwegian conditions, has been refurbished using several million Euros worth of Tratos Oil & Gas Cables by Saipem.

Operating successfully on the Norwegian Continental Shelf since 1990, Scarabeo 5 is a 5th generation vessel with large capacity, advanced performance and strong technical capabilities. It features a dynamic positioning (DP) system, allowing drilling at great water depths – down to 2000 meters for this rig to date.

As part of its ongoing maintenance programme, Saipem – a world leader in the oil and gas contracting services sector – has installed oil and gas cables from Tratos to the value of several million Euros

The cables are being used to supply power, control and signalling throughout the rig.
Tratos Oil & Gas Cables were specified by Saipem due to their quality design and construction – essential in such a demanding offshore application. Tratos, which has been producing cables oil and gas operations for over 40 years, has a thorough understanding of this market and designs its cables to withstand these harsh environments.

Many of the cables supplied to Saipem for Scarabeo 5, for example, feature a longitudinal double aluminium tape barrier to combat the problem of corrosion caused by many of the substances that cables come into contact with such as acids, solvents, hydrocarbons and moisture, all of which can cause significant damage if allowed to seep through the cable. This solution is far lighter and more effective than that used by alternative manufacturers, such as corrugated metal tapes and lead sheaths.

Scarabeo 5

Scarabeo 5 is one of the best in class unit of its generation. The unit holds the ABS DP3 class notation, and it is fully compliant with Norwegian regulations. The unit can operates also “moored thruster assisted”, reducing fuel consumption and environmental impacts.

The rig is winterized and has been operating in subarctic environment for more than 20 years; it holds the ABS ICE CLASS IC notation.

In December 2020 Saipem launched its new brand campaign “Dear Future”, which emphasizes the strategic repositioning process undertaken by the Company: Saipem is nowadays a global company, present in more than 60 countries, able to provide solutions and services with high added value and to implement innovative projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Through an imaginary dialogue with the Future, the source from which it draws the evolutionary energy that has always guided and inspired it, Saipem involves the public through an open letter retracing the main stages of an extraordinary adventure that began in the 1950s and continues today, still laying the foundations to build an increasingly responsible future. A journey that has led Saipem at every corner of the planet thanks to the talent and ingenuity of her people and to an authentic and passionate mission: to imagine, design and implement innovative solutions for a constantly evolving world in which energy and mobility are accessible and sustainable.

Saipem identifies the constant and intense relationship between energy – inspired by the future – and evolution as the engine that drives society and mankind towards increasingly responsible challenges and objectives and uses the two terms to define the new brand payoff: Empower evolution.

The campaign therefore reflects Saipem’s new positioning focused on the energy transition underway and supported by a strong sustainable culture and an always innovative approach. In particular, sustainability is conceived as a transversal and characteristic element of the business, not simply a trend to follow.

Tratos is very pleased to contribute toward achieving Goal 7 of the UN Global Goals to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 13: Climate Action, and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
