11 kV Cables for UK Power Distribution Networks
In the realm of UK power distribution networks, 11kV cables hold a crucial role in ensuring reliable electricity transmission. Specifically designed to meet the exacting standards of British Standard cables BS6622 and BS7835, these cables are engineered to operate at voltages of 11kV, making them a cornerstone of power distribution infrastructure.
One notable feature of 11 kV cables is their versatility in conductor options. They are available with either Class 2 stranded copper conductors or Class 1 solid/Class 2 stranded aluminium conductors. Copper conductors are esteemed for their exceptional electrical conductivity, while aluminium conductors offer a cost-effective alternative without compromising on performance.
To safeguard against electrical and thermal stresses, these cables boast Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. Complemented by a semi-conductive XLPE insulation screen, they exhibit outstanding electrical integrity, ensuring stable performance even under demanding voltage conditions.
Mechanical protection is provided through robust armoring options. Single-core variants incorporate Aluminium Wire Armour (AWA), while multicore versions are fortified with Steel Wire Armour (SWA). This armor not only fortifies the cable’s structural integrity but also permits direct burial in the ground, guaranteeing long-term dependability.
Electromagnetic interference is minimized through the incorporation of metallic screens, which can be configured as individual or overall copper tape, tailored to the application’s specific needs.
Additional components such as Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) filler and binding tape bolster the cable’s construction, providing further mechanical support. A Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) bedding ensures insulation and protection, while Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) compounds in the cable sheath prioritize safety and environmental considerations.
Apart from their 11kV voltage rating, these British Standard BS6622 and BS7835 armoured cables are also available in 19/33kV variants, offering versatile solutions for diverse power distribution requirements. For in-depth technical specifications, consult our detailed PDF specification sheets.
